Teacher Salary Raise. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador celebrated the work of education workers in the country and announced a salary raise for teachers. He highlighted his government’s efforts to improve educators’ salaries.
The president explained that his administration allocated an additional MX$175 billion to the budget to increase education workers' salaries. He also mentioned that by the end of the previous administration, primary school teachers made on average MX$11,952. This now stands at MX$17,635, a 47.5% increase during the administration.
He also announced a 10% salary increase for federalized basic education teachers. “This is a special recognition to the teachers of Mexico,” he said, adding that he would make more announcements on advancement in education and employment benefits for national teaching.
Historic Amount in Foreign Investment. The president announced that a historic level of foreign investment was recorded in 1Q24, reaching US$20.313 billion.
Mexican Agricultural Workers’ Death. The president confirmed the death of eight Mexicans in a bus crash in Florida, United States, and reported there were seven injuries. Forty-four workers who were hired by an American company on work visas were involved in the car accident. The president reported that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is caring for the injured nationals.
AMLO Addresses News Regarding Blackouts. The government denied that an energy crisis exists and reiterated that the blackouts that occurred in the country last week were due to atypical conditions. The government also denied that these blackouts were due to a lack of investment in transmission and distribution infrastructure. “As explained by CENACE, it was an atypical situation due to the shutdown of several generation plants.”
President López Obrador stated that CENACE’s alert state was triggered only to avoid possible risks due to an excess in demand that, if not addressed, could lead to generalized blackouts. “CENACE works to guarantee stability in the system and minimize impacts in the energy supply. CENACE’s preventive state alert does not imply restrictions on energy supply, as incorrectly reported by the media,” he said.
He criticized the energy reform and reiterated his government’s intention for CFE to cover 60% of electricity generation by the end of his administration with investments in over 20 projects.
CFE’s Intervention in the Elections. The president also addressed news reports that assured that CFE was implicitly given instructions to disrupt energy supply during the elections to alter the results. He said that this news is false.
