Mexico City’s Minister of Environment (SEDEMA), led by Julia Álvarez, participated in the event, Driving Decarbonization of Cargo Transport in Mexico City, held at Nacional Financiera (NAFIN) during Mexico’s Climate Action Week. During her remarks, Álvarez highlighted the Laneshift Initiative as a strategic alliance to accelerate the transition to zero-emission technologies in urban cargo transport. She emphasized that the initiative is key to improving air quality, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and promoting sustainable mobility in the city.

The collaboration, driven alongside C40 Cities, The Climate Pledge, and private sector partners, is intended to support Mexico City’s climate commitments under the Climate Action Program (PACCM). “Electromobility is not a goal in itself but a tool to combat air pollution and protect public health,” Álvarez said.

Advances from Laneshift will contribute to updating the PACCM, particularly in transportation, and integrate with other programs such as ProAire ZMVM 2021–2030 and the Self-Regulation Program for Electromobility. “These actions send a strong message: Mexico City is a hub of innovation and a climate leader in Latin America,” Álvarez added.

Since January 2025, Mexico City has implemented the Pollutant Emissions Tax, designed to raise awareness of emissions rather than generate significant revenue. The proceeds are directed toward environmental and public welfare projects.

SEDEMA invited companies, financial institutions, and international partners to join the initiative: “We must innovate and build urban mobility that is sustainable, efficient, and inclusive. Only through shared collaboration can we achieve the transformation our city and world need” representatives of the agency underscored.
