Environmental Approval for Cozumel Cruise Terminal Cancelled
The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARANT) has canceled the environmental impact approval issued on Dec. 7, 2021, for the Cozumel Cruise Terminal project, the agency announced Thursday.
The decision follows a review request filed by Cozumel residents who raised concerns about potential effects of the project on the island’s marine and coastal ecosystems. As a result, the General Directorate of Environmental Impact and Risk (DGIRA) will conduct a new environmental assessment in accordance with Art. 35 of the General Law of Ecological Balance and Environmental Protection (LGEEPA) and other applicable regulations.
SEMARNAT emphasized that the move reflects its commitment to a rigorous, transparent, and legally compliant environmental review process that protects Mexico’s natural heritage while addressing the legitimate concerns of citizens. The agency highlighted that conservation of biodiversity and the integrity of marine ecosystems remains a priority in environmental decision-making.
