Mexico to Host Regional Climate Meeting Ahead of COP30
Mexico will host a ministerial meeting of 23 environmental representatives from Latin America and the Caribbean on Aug. 25-26, aiming to strengthen regional leadership ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) scheduled for November in Belém, Brazil.
The meeting, jointly convened by Mexico and Brazil, will include dialogue sessions among environment ministers and representatives from civil society to discuss coordinated actions on climate issues.
“We have common positions, so what can we do? What does this region offer? This region offers nature-based solutions; it is the region with the most water resources and one of the cleanest energy matrices,” said Alicia Bárcena, Mexico’s Minister of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT), during an event at Tecnológico de Monterrey.
The agenda includes discussions on the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement, the presentation of the COP30 Action Agenda, and a panel focused on reducing the vulnerability of communities across the region. Participants will also review updates on Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and climate plans aligned with sustainable development goals.
Additionally, a session on climate financing is planned, along with the presentation of a report from the COP30 Presidency on the Bakú-to-Belém Roadmap, which tracks progress on commitments made during the most recent climate summit.
With this meeting, Mexico and Brazil seek to consolidate common regional positions and present a unified voice at COP30, strengthening collaboration on climate action and sustainable development.
