Michelin’s Leon Plant Named Most Modern and Sustainable
Michelin’s tire plant in Leon, Guanajuato, has been recognized as the group’s most modern and sustainable facility worldwide, following a visit by Mexico’s Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare (STPS). Positioned as a benchmark in green manufacturing, the plant operates entirely on non-CO2-emitting energy sources.
Gabriel Alejandro Tamariz Sánchez, head, STPS Unit of Labor Policy and Institutional Relations, said Michelin’s approach demonstrates a strong commitment to dignified work and innovation. Built with an investment of US$900 million, the Leon site strengthens Michelin’s production capacity while consolidating Mexico as a hub in the global automotive and logistics supply chain. Since opening, the plant has produced more than 15 million tires and created over 2,000 jobs.
Inclusion and workforce development are central to the facility’s operations. Women represent 39% of production employees, one of the highest levels of female participation in the automotive sector. Seventy-five percent of staff are under 35, reflecting a strategy of generational renewal. Additionally, Michelin runs a dual-education program with CECyTEG and CONALEP, linking academic training with industrial practice. Currently, 21 apprentices are enrolled. The company offers benefits that exceed industry standards, including private medical insurance and full social security coverage. According to STPS, these practices illustrate how multinational companies can contribute to employee well-being and broader social development.
Michelin, which operates in 175 countries with 129,800 employees, has committed to achieving net-zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 and full carbon neutrality by 2050.
