The state government of Nayarit has announced a strategic expansion of its sustainable tourism policy, focusing on infrastructure upgrades, cultural integration, and the development of new microdestinations. The announcement was made during the presentation of a new terminal at the Tepic–Riviera Nayarit International Airport, where Secretary of Tourism Enrique del Real Tostado and Governor Miguel Ángel Navarro Quintero addressed business and community representatives.

Del Real Tostado emphasized that the government’s tourism strategy goes beyond the traditional sun-and-beach model, promoting an approach that balances economic growth, environmental sustainability, and community development. “Tourism should also connect with our roots—cultural, archaeological, and community-based Mexico,” he said.

As part of this broader strategy, the state is developing 33 microdestinations under the campaign “One Destination, a Thousand Experiences.” The initiative seeks to showcase Nayarit’s cultural and ecological diversity, highlighting areas beyond the well-known Riviera Nayarit by integrating rural towns, natural landscapes, and adventure-based experiences.

The state is also investing in water treatment and rural infrastructure to support tourism growth while maintaining environmental safeguards. Del Real Tostado cited efforts to rehabilitate treatment plants and strengthen water networks to ensure that rural communities are connected to major tourism corridors.

The new terminal in Tepic is positioned as a gateway to both the Pacific coast and Nayarit’s inland cultural heritage. Del Real Tostado stated that the project will enhance air connectivity and create new opportunities for local economies.

He also highlighted community-led tourism projects like La Palmita, which aim to establish long-term tourism models that prioritize the well-being of Indigenous and rural populations. According to Del Real Tostado, the initiative seeks to “lay not only the first stone, but the first root” of sustainable tourism in Nayarit.
