Newmont Mexico Earns 18th ESG Excellence Award
Newmont Mexico has been recognized for its ESG credentials by the Mexican Center for Philanthropy (CEMEFI), according to its 2025 Socially Responsible Enterprises report. This marks the 18th consecutive year that the company, which operates the Peñasquito mine in Zacatecas, has received the distinction.
The award is based on an evaluation of multiple ESG criteria, including human rights, environmental sustainability, ethical governance, labor relations, supply chain integrity, community development, and gender equity. In its mining operations specifically, Newmont was recognized for efficient water and energy usage, emissions reduction, and responsible waste management.
Operations at Peñasquito generate significant economic impact in the region. The mine supports more than 5,000 direct jobs, 70% of which are held by local Zacatecans, and contributes to 28,000 indirect jobs. It also maintains relationships with 285 local suppliers, making Newmont the second-largest employer in Zacatecas.
Beyond employment, the company invests in community infrastructure and sustainable development. Over the past three years, Newmont has allocated over MXN$150 million (US$8.08 million) to sustainable community development and environmental preservation initiatives, including reforestation and the protection of endemic species.
According to Tom Palmer, CEO, Newmont Corporation, the company remains "focused on creating value and improving lives through sustainable mining."
