Sony Sets New Green Management 2030 Targets to Cut Emissions
Sony Group Corporation announced its new medium-term environmental targets under its Green Management 2030 (GM2030) plan, effective from FY26 through FY30. The targets are part of Sony’s long-term Road to Zero strategy, which aims to achieve a zero environmental footprint across its product lifecycles and business activities by FY50.
Sony establishes five-year milestones to track progress toward this goal, using a back-casting approach to set objectives based on the final target. The company reported that it expects to meet most of the objectives under its current plan, Green Management 2025 (GM2025), which runs through FY25.
Under GM2030, Sony introduced new key performance indicators designed to address issues identified during GM2025 while accounting for current environmental challenges. The plan focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting resource circulation, limiting plastic use, and strengthening renewable energy initiatives.
Sony aims to cut total Scope 1, 2, and 3 greenhouse gas emissions by more than 25% over the five-year period and reach net-zero emissions across its value chain by FY40, a decade earlier than initially planned. Measures to achieve these reductions include lowering Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 60% compared to fiscal year 2025 levels, reducing Scope 3 emissions by 25%, and sourcing 100% renewable electricity for Sony’s global operations. The company also plans to encourage its major raw material and component suppliers to transition to renewable energy.
The GM2030 plan also advances Sony’s initiatives to improve resource circulation by reducing reliance on non-circular plastics and expanding the use of recycled materials. Targets include limiting non-circular plastic use per product weight to 30% or less, using 100% recycled tin in solder for printed circuit boards in specific models, and adopting 100% recycled gold for certain components. Sony is also working to increase product recyclability, extend product lifespans, and promote component reuse.
As part of its efforts to address plastic pollution, Sony plans to reduce plastic use in product packaging to 10% or less, eliminate plastic packaging for products weighing 5kg or less, and remove plastic packaging at its retail stores.
Sony’s renewable energy strategy includes participation in the RE100 initiative, with a commitment to source 100% renewable electricity globally by 2030. The company’s net-zero targets have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), and it continues to enhance climate-related disclosures by endorsing the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) recommendations.
Additionally, Sony plans to expand environmental awareness initiatives through its entertainment content and collaborations with artists. These activities aim to engage stakeholders and promote sustainable practices across different sectors.
Sony stated that it will continue working toward its GM2030 goals to reduce its environmental footprint across the supply chain and develop environmentally conscious products and services, maintaining its broader objective of achieving a zero environmental footprint by 2050.
