Twenty Municipalities Sign National Circular Economy Pact
Twenty Mexican municipalities sign the National Pact of Municipalities for Circular Economy and Trustworthiness, which aims to promote circular economy models that reinforce local governance and citizen confidence. The initiative is being led by the Ministry of Economy (SE) and supported by the International Foundation for the Development of Trustworthy Government (FIDEGOC), the Latin American Network of Trustworthy Governments (RED LAGOC), and Práctica: Laboratorio para la Democracia. Members of the pact include the municipalities of San Luis Potosi, Cozumel, Playas de Rosarito, Delicias and Escobedo, among others.
A central feature of the pact is creation of “trustworthy circles,” collaborative platforms involving public, private, academic, and civil society stakeholders. Participating municipalities are required to establish these circles within four months to implement circular economy initiatives locally. Rocío Adame, Mayor of Playas de Rosarito, says that the agreement will strengthen key sectors such as tourism, gastronomy, and fisheries through sustainable and certifiable practices, contributing to a more reliable and efficient local administration.
The signing ceremony, led by Marcelo Ebrard, Minister of Economy, included around 220 participants from federal, state, and municipal governments, as well as representatives from businesses, academia, and civil society.
Progress made by the 20 municipalities is expected to be presented at Smart City Barcelona 2025 and the G20 Summit in South Africa in 2029, with the goal of elevating Mexico’s sustainability profile on the world stage.
