Mexican Universities Form Climate Action Network
Twenty-one Mexican universities have signed a national declaration to coordinate their efforts in climate action, marking the launch of a new inter-institutional network to address environmental challenges through education, research, and community engagement.
“We must build a more resilient and fair Mexico, fully aware of the urgency and complexity of the task ahead,” says Juan Pablo Murra, Rector, Tecnológico de Monterrey.
In a move to align higher education with climate priorities, public and private universities across Mexico signed the document during the 2025 Summit of Rectors for Climate Action. The summit, convened by the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) and Tecnológico de Monterrey, marked the formal creation of the Mexican University Network for Climate Action.
The initiative aims to consolidate academic, scientific, and community-based responses to climate change. Participating institutions committed to forming a unified agenda on sustainability, reinforcing their role in training future professionals and advancing research-driven solutions. Signatories intend to reduce their environmental footprint, adapt to climate challenges, and encourage inter-university collaboration.
The declaration recognizes scientific evidence as the basis for cutting emissions and adopting sustainable practices. It also encourages reviewing institutional practices in teaching, research, and outreach to align with climate objectives.
The new network is designed to enhance academic partnerships, promote best practices, and foster a shared climate action roadmap. This collective approach also incorporates culture, arts, and humanities to foster inclusion and dialogue. The universities aim to contribute meaningfully to meeting the Paris Agreement and local climate goals.
