UNAM Joins National Education Platform SaberesMX
The Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) will contribute its academic expertise to SaberesMX, a national digital education platform designed to enhance learning opportunities and workforce development in Mexico. The initiative aims to equip future generations with the skills needed to adapt to rapid scientific and technological change.
“We must adapt our study plans and programs in a timely manner, review our teaching strategies, and ensure the integral formation of students, physically, culturally, and emotionally,” says Leonardo Lomelí, Dean, UNAM.
During the First National Meeting of Universities and Public Institutions of Higher Education for the Transformation of Mexico, held at the Ministry of Public Education (SEP), Lomelí said that higher education must evolve to meet new social and technological demands. He called on universities to modernize curricula, update teaching strategies, and support students’ comprehensive development, including their mental health.
SaberesMX, presented on Nov. 4, 2025 is a public initiative that unites higher education institutions across the country. Through SaberesMx, the federal government aims to build a unified national system of open education that connects academic institutions and citizens, positioning knowledge as a central instrument for development and inclusion, reports MBN.
Lomelí highlights that this effort could help Mexico integrate more effectively into global education and labor systems while expanding access to learning opportunities. He underscores the relevance of UNAM’s foundational educational model, “learning to learn,” as essential for preparing students for lifelong education. He also urges institutions to coordinate in building a national training system that supports Mexico’s social and economic development through SaberesMX.
President Claudia Sheinbaum calls on all higher education institutions to contribute to the platform, noting its potential to strengthen access and equity in education. “The more educational spaces we open, the more peace and security we will have,” she states.
Mario Delgado, Minister, SEP, also invites institutions to reform higher education to ensure relevance in a global context, particularly amid growing competition from international certifications. He identifies key priorities: integrating humanism into education, using AI ethically and responsibly, and reaching 55% coverage in higher education.
