Elon Musk, CEO, Tesla, recently unveiled Grok, an AI-powered chatbot that is expected to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Grok is part of Musk's latest venture xAI and has a distinctive "rebellious streak" and witty demeanor, says Musk. However, Grok’s chatbot will only be available to premium subscribers on X’s platform following rigorous testing.

Despite ongoing concerns related to AI like cybersecurity vulnerabilities, data privacy breaches, copyright infringements, and the spread of misinformation, many continue to invest in this emerging technology. Major tech players such as Amazon, Microsoft and Google are planning to invest a combined US$42 billion on cloud computing technology to support the growth of generative AI.

According to xAI’s website, Grok is being developed using data from Musk’s X, which allows the chatbot to be deeply informed about the latest developments compared to alternative bots that rely on static datasets. Moreover, the xAI team explained that Grok is powered by a sophisticated language model known as Grok-1 and it is expected to surpass the power of the free version of ChatGPT, GPT-3.5. However, developers recognized that Grok is now lagging behind the most powerful version of ChatGPT’s generative AI tool, GPT-4, which leverages extensive training data and cloud computing resources.

Musk says that Grok's responses are filled with humor, but it also maintains ethical boundaries and cautions users against engaging in illegal activities and incentivizes the responsible use of its capabilities. Musk had previously advocated for a pause in developing powerful AI systems in the US Congress, but he recently acknowledged the inevitability of this technology.

“I signed that letter knowing it was futile,” Musk later admitted. “I just wanted to be on the record as recommending a pause,” he added. While Musk distanced himself from OpenAI due to disagreements and fears related to the associated risks of AI tools, he emphasized xAI's primary goal would be to build AI models “in a good way.”

Grok is undergoing testing and is available only to a limited number of users in the United States through an early access program. The chatbot is expected to continue evolving, with xAI promising to introduce new capabilities and features in the upcoming months. However, Grok’s features will only be accessible to X Premium+ users, which requires a monthly subscription fee of US$16.
