Google Mexico announced the appointment of Sebastián Valverde as its new Director General, effective Jan. 26, 2026. This leadership change focuses on accelerating technological growth and strengthening institutional collaboration within the Mexican market.

The transition follows the departure of Julian Coulter, who led the subsidiary for five years before moving to lead the global food, beverage, and restaurants division. "Mexico is a hub of limitless talent and creativity," says Valverde. "My objective is to take that energy to the next level, building upon the existing foundation and accelerating innovation so that technology has a transformative impact on society."

The appointment occurs as Mexico consolidates its position as a strategic hub for digital operations in Latin America. According to the Google for Mexico 2023 report, the economic impact of the corporation reached MX$278 billion (US$14.9 billion) in 2023. This figure represents a continued growth trajectory from 2022, when the impact was recorded at MX$266 billion, a 71% increase compared with 2021. This financial data encompasses job creation, investments in digital infrastructure, and the expansion of the Android developer ecosystem.

Valverde brings 20 years of industry experience, including 15 years within the corporation, to this role. His previous tenure as the leader of the Google Miami office involved managing key markets in Hispanic America and the United States. This background provides a comprehensive perspective on the regional business landscape. The transition marks the end of a leadership period under Coulter, who guided the company through the digital transformation accelerated by the pandemic, the expansion of e-commerce, and the rising demand for cloud and AI services.

A critical milestone during this period was the 2024 launch of a new cloud region in Mexico. This infrastructure facility was designed to improve service availability and latency for corporations, startups, and government institutions. The establishment of this region aligns with the corporate strategy to expand local infrastructure and promote data sovereignty in key markets.

Under the leadership of Valverde, the company expects to deepen its commitment to AI adoption and infrastructure development. In 2024, the corporation introduced Generative AI tools specifically for small and medium enterprises. This was followed in 2025 by the expansion of Capacita+ AI, a scholarship program for data science and applied AI conducted in partnership with local universities. These initiatives aim to close the digital skills gap and enhance the digital competitiveness of Mexico.

The Google for Mexico initiative remains a cornerstone of the regional strategy, focusing on digital inclusion, training, and entrepreneurship. Corporate data indicates that these programs have benefited more than 100,000 young professionals and entrepreneurs across the country.

Valverde will begin his duties remotely from Miami on Jan. 26, 2026, before relocating to the offices in Mexico City.
