Google Cloud has kicked off its new cloud region in Queretaro, Mexico. This project, which is expected to contribute over US$11 billion to Mexico's GDP and generate more than 100,000 jobs by 2030, seeks to accelerate the digital transformation of companies in the country.
"At Google Cloud we are convinced that this new region in Queretaro will be an engine of transformation for Mexico. Not only do we provide cutting-edge infrastructure, but we drive the country's economic growth," says Julio Velázquez, General Manager Mexico, Google Cloud.
This cloud region is part of Google Cloud's global strategy to expand its infrastructure and bring advanced cloud computing technologies to key markets. In Mexico, this region will facilitate the adoption of digital solutions, enabling organizations to scale their operations and improve their competitiveness.
In July 2024, Google Cloud announced plans to establish its first data region in Mexico, located in Queretaro. This region, which was initially projected to begin operations by 2025, is its third in Latin America, as MBN previously reported.
"This new facility will not only improve the local digital infrastructure, but will also promote the development of digital skills and support the state's entrepreneurial ecosystem," said Marco Antonio Del Prete Tercero, Minister of Sustainable Development of Queretaro, at the time of the announcement.
The new cloud region will provide low latency services, high security, scalability, and environmental sustainability. This will allow sectors such as finance, manufacturing and telecommunications to optimize their operations and develop projects that require high availability and regulatory compliance, says Velázquez.
Google Cloud has also committed to train 1 million people in Mexico in cloud and AI technologies in the coming years, strengthening the digital skills of the workforce. Thomas Kurian, CEO, Google Cloud, told Wired that these goals will be realized through scholarships for free online courses on AI, covering topics such as ML, deep learning, and application development with AI, emphasizing their role as necessary skills to participate in the technological revolution.
The region will enable the implementation of latency-sensitive projects, such as financial services, while ensuring data residency in the national territory, says Mauricio Sánchez, Managing Partner, Amarello Tecnologías de Información, in a Google Cloud press release
The cloud region will also impact the public sector. Emilio Barriga Delgado from the Superior Audit Office of the Federation (ASF), highlights that the use of advanced technologies such as Vertex AI is improving public spending oversight processes and strengthening transparency. "We are confident that the country's companies and organizations will know how to capitalize on this opportunity and we are here to accompany them to build an ecosystem where innovation and digital leadership multiplies," says Velázquez in the press release.
