Google’s 2023 Economic Impact in Mexico Reaches MX$278 Billion

Google generated an economic impact of MX$278 billion (US$13.8 billion) in Mexico in 2023, according to its latest impact report.
At the Google for Mexico 2024 event, the company reiterated its commitment to the country’s economic, technological, and social development. The “Economic Impact for Mexico” report highlighted how services like Search, Ads, and the Play Store have been pivotal for businessesa cross various industries.
The Android ecosystem emerged as a major driver of job creation, generating 170,800 new jobsi n 2023.
Google Workspace also played a crucial role, saving Mexican workers an estimated 283 hours per person annually through task simplification and automation.
“The digital transformation of Mexico’s economy is a priority for us. We are offering AI-powered tools that streamline business operations and help companies of all sizes reach more customers,” said Marcos Westphalen, Director of Google Customer Solutions for Latin America.
The company further highlighted AI as a key factor in creating solutions across industries.
Google has integrated AI into its products to optimize tasks such as email drafting and decision-making in areas like climate change.
One key project mentioned was Google.org’s collaboration with the International Water Management Institute. Google provided US$1.5 million for an initiative using AI to enhance water resilience in Mexico. The partnership, which also involves the National Water Commission (CONAGUA), focuses on promoting sustainable water management with advanced technologies.
“We believe the development of AI must come from ongoing dialogue between our company and the communities we serve. To support this, we’re expanding our engineering team in Mexico City and hiring over 100 professionals to continue advancing technology for positive impact,” said Julian Coulter, Country Manager, Google Mexico.
The event also introduced the “Results About You” privacy tool, now available in Mexico. This feature allows users to request the removal of personal details—such as phone numbers, addresses, and emails—from search results, enhancing user control over personal data and bolstering privacy and security online.
In education, Google reaffirmed its focus on building digital skills in Mexico, critical to the country’s global competitiveness. As of August 2024, over 26,000 Mexicans have completed Google Career Certificates in high-demand tech skills. The company also announced 90,000 scholarships for Mexicans interested in AI and digital skills training, aimed at preparing them for the evolving job market.

It is not just about accessing technology, but knowing how to use it effectively for meaningful impact,” said Maria Valle, Chief Legal Officer, Google.
