Mexico: The Epicenter of a Conversational AI Revolution
STORY INLINE POST
We now live in a world where artificial intelligence is everywhere. From the voice recognition devices in our homes and the GPS that assists us on our way to work every morning, to personalized content on Instagram and automated chatbots on WhatsApp, AI is completely revolutionizing and reshaping the way we live, work and interact with our friends, family and businesses.
The impact of AI today is transformative. In my experience, particularly with AI-driven conversational tools, I would say we have quickly reached a point of no return in terms of AI-driven customer service, UX, lead generation and conversational commerce (e-commerce through conversational channels, also known as c-commerce).
AI is present in myriad of everyday activities, transactions and interactions between people, people with businesses, people and businesses with machines, and machines with machines as well.
In healthcare, conversational AI-driven tools have helped connect patients and doctors, book consultations and tests, and provide personalized monitoring to patients. In logistics, people have been able to track their orders in real time. In finance, people are sending remittances through social media. In human resources, it has been a fundamental tool to qualify candidates, ask for documentation, book interviews and train employees. In retail, you can browse catalogs, add to cart, select the delivery address and pay without leaving WhatsApp! And the list goes on, meaning conversational AI is here to stay.
In Mexico, there is a favorable horizon for the adoption of AI-based solutions. According to the latest report from the Mexican Internet Association, there is a pronounced confidence in the utility of AI, with Gen-Z being the most receptive, closely followed by millennials and Generation X.
In terms of c-commerce, Mexico is among the countries with the highest adoption of AI-driven tools. But before I dive into this, I have a question for you: When was the last time you checked your WhatsApp? Let me guess: Was it less than 5 minutes ago? I thought so.
Its ubiquitous presence in the digital lives of Mexicans is evident from the platform’s staggering statistics, reporting one of the highest penetration rates with nearly 90 million users. And this is music to the ears of thousands of businesses in the country.
Companies from all sectors across Mexico have discovered WhatsApp as a crucial tool to grow their business, mainly because they can capitalize on the popularity of the app to interact with their customers efficiently and personally, providing immediate responses and solutions tailored to their needs. Moreover, downloading the app is completely free, which helps democratize access for businesses to connect with anyone with a smartphone, regardless of their economic status.
On another note, customer behavior has shifted in favor of c-commerce as 98% of users are making online purchases directly through their smartphones and most of these transactions are made through social media platforms.
Now, with the advent of ChatGPT, experts have pointed out that, despite a modest growth of 1.7% in the total ChatGPT visits in Mexico, there is a vast space in the country for the adoption of this type of technology in the realm of conversational commerce, suggesting an unparalleled business opportunity for companies across Mexico to improve their communication channels.
Generative AI presents an opportunity for businesses to offer highly personalized experiences to their customers, which leads to higher sales and increased client satisfaction. In other Latin American countries, businesses are using AI-enhanced tools to monitor conversations on social media, track and analyze consumer behavior, predict trends and notify businesses of potential clients. And Mexico is not falling behind.
According to a Gartner poll, over 75% of the people surveyed in the country believe that Generative AI-based applications will elevate their interactions with companies as they will be able to experience improved product recommendations, personalized customer support and improved online purchasing processes.
The accelerated growth of e-commerce in Mexico, with rates exceeding 20%, reinforces the country's position as a favorable market for the implementation of Gen-AI solutions in conversational commerce. In other geographies in the Latin American region, the benefits of integrating Gen-AI to business tools are clearly visible.
Brazil, for instance, has leveraged the use of this technology in conversational commerce solutions, increasing ROI in marketing actions by up to 10 times using messaging apps and improved conversion rates up to 3 times compared to other digital channels. Moreover, Brazilians have completely normalized interacting with bots with different types of businesses in their everyday life.
Mexico finds itself at the epicenter of a digital revolution where conversational artificial intelligence emerges as a strategic tool for commerce amid a landscape of high expectations for an ultra personalized customer experience. The growing confidence in the utility of AI, the high penetration of WhatsApp, and the boom in e-commerce provide a favorable scenario for companies to embrace these technologies and shape the future of digital commerce in the country. Undoubtedly, the possibilities are bright, and the path toward a smarter and more personalized customer experience is closer than ever.
