Morelia, Michoacan, has implemented a digital security model based on the integration of Axon body cameras and a cloud-based evidence management system. This initiative aims to optimize police operations and improve transparency in public safety management.

The technological implementation responds to the need for more efficient and secure evidence management. “Axon Evidence is much more than cloud storage. It is an intelligent system that optimizes processes and guarantees the chain of custody automatically and securely,” Alejandro Herrera, Country Manager, Axon Mexico.

Digital transformation in public safety is a global trend that seeks to improve incident response and increase transparency and accountability within police forces. Morelia has adopted this strategy through the integration of Axon Body cameras and the Axon Evidence platform. The decision to incorporate these technologies addresses the need to improve officers’ situational awareness, accuracy in data collection, and integrity of digital evidence.

This implementation, in the works since 2022 under the leadership of Mayor Alfonso Martínez, aims to modernize municipal security infrastructure and align it with international standards. This approach has the potential to directly impact crime reduction and strengthen public trust in security institutions.

The security model implemented in Morelia includes the use of Axon Body cameras, high-definition devices that provide officers with real-time situational awareness. These cameras activate by voice and automatically capture events, contributing to accurate incident documentation and promoting operational transparency.

Additionally, Axon Evidence has been integrated as a cloud-based digital evidence management solution that facilitates secure collection, organization, and sharing of evidence, enabling cross-functional integration among police, judicial, and administrative bodies. This digital ecosystem fosters collaboration and improves the efficiency of investigative processes.

Morelia has seen a decrease in the number of robberies following the adoption of this technology. The city saw a 58% reduction in robberies against pedestrians during the 2021-2024 period in comparison to the 2018-2021 period. It also saw a 41.6% decrease in business robberies and a 39% drop in home burglaries, reports Geek and Life.

Furthermore, the National Urban Public Safety Survey conducted by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) indicates a 32% improvement in public perception of the Morelia Municipal Police’s effectiveness and a 23% increase in trust levels. Greater transparency derived from digital evidence management has strengthened morale and the perception of honesty within the police force.
