We have gradually witnessed how AI is moving from being a futuristic promise to becoming a tangible reality on many fronts, including preserving security. The ability of AI to process large volumes of data, identify hidden patterns, and generate predictions with a high degree of accuracy is opening a new chapter in contemporary cities: the era of predictive security. 

Imagine a security system that not only reacts to crime but can anticipate it. A system capable of analyzing historical crime data, real-time information from sensors and surveillance cameras, and even contextual variables such as mass events or weather conditions, to identify patterns and predict where and when crime is most likely to occur. This is the promise of AI applied to citizen security, and it is already materializing in our region. 

In cities such as Mexico City, Buenos Aires, and Rio de Janeiro, AI is being used to optimize protection in public spaces, detect suspicious vehicles, and warn of crowds that could lead to risky situations. Police can now more accurately identify specific areas that have historically shown high crime rates, deploying resources more efficiently and preventing crimes before they occur. 

Solutions today must integrate the latest in AI technology both in the cloud and on the devices themselves. Smart cameras with edge computing capabilities are enabling accurate detection and classification of objects, people, and vehicles, differentiating between everyday situations and suspicious behavior that could indicate a crime in progress or about to occur. 

Such cameras with embedded AI, for example, can recognize faces and compare them in real-time with databases of persons of interest, issuing instant alerts to the relevant authorities. This capability, combined with a video management platform such as Orchestrate, enables the automation of responses and the creation of intelligent workflows that optimize the work of security professionals, allowing them to make faster and more effective decisions. 

A concrete example of this is the implementation of our technology at a major seaport in the region. Through intelligent video analysis, the system can automatically detect suspicious activities such as the entry of unauthorized persons into restricted areas, the abandonment of suspicious packages or unusual container movements, alerting port security in real time, and enabling an immediate response to prevent illicit trafficking of goods or acts of sabotage.

AI functions as an intelligent assistant, providing critical information in real time and freeing operators from repetitive tasks so that they can focus on strategic decision-making and incident response.

We must be aware of the importance of data privacy and security. Therefore, it is crucial to have tools in place to ensure that sensitive information is always protected and that its use is carried out ethically and responsibly. The implementation of AI in citizen security has its challenges. It is critical to address ethical concerns, allow transparency in the use of the technology, and promote a fair and equitable use of AI, avoiding discriminatory bias. 

AI has the potential to positively transform citizen security in Latin America and the Caribbean, helping to create safer and more resilient cities for all. It is, therefore, important that industry and institutions are constantly innovating and working collaboratively to realize this vision, building a future where technology and human intelligence work together to create a safer world. 

To fully leverage the potential of AI in citizen security, it is crucial to foster a collaborative approach that involves all relevant stakeholders. Governments, law enforcement, technology companies, and civil society must work together to establish clear, ethical, and transparent regulatory frameworks to guide the development and implementation of these technologies. 

Training and education of security professionals is also critical. Equipping our law enforcement with the tools and knowledge to understand and use AI effectively is critical, maximizing its benefits and mitigating potential risks. 

Public trust is essential to the success of AI in citizen security. It is essential to promote an open and transparent dialog about the capabilities and limitations of these technologies, addressing the concerns of society and ensuring that their use is carried out responsibly and ethically. 

This is how predictive security, leveraging AI and coordinated, data-driven human work, allows us to anticipate potentially problematic situations and take proactive measures to ensure the well-being of the community. This represents a unique opportunity to build safer, more efficient, and sustainable cities. By taking a proactive, data-driven approach, we can improve the quality of life for all citizens. 

From this perspective, AI, used responsibly and ethically, can be a powerful catalyst for building safer, fairer, and more resilient cities in Latin America and the Caribbean.
