Mexican Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente said that early talks on the USMCA review are progressing well and expressed optimism that the agreement will be renewed next year.

“We are prepared to keep advancing the review. This treaty benefits everyone involved. Canadian Prime Minister Carney also supports both the review and renewal. Things are moving in the right direction,” De la Fuente stated.

In a Senate briefing, he noted that a public consultation is underway to evaluate how USMCA is functioning. He highlighted close coordination with the Finance and Economy ministries to ensure Mexico is ready for the upcoming review. “We continue the necessary dialogues to set the stage for progress,” he added.

Responding to opposition questions, de la Fuente emphasized that while the treaty review is a top priority, Mexico also seeks to broaden its relations with other countries and regions. “Those who doubt we can secure a positive review with the United States and Canada are mistaken. I also do not understand why anyone would oppose an agreement that clearly benefits all three nations,” he said.

He added that he and Minister of Economy Marcelo Ebrard are working to ensure the review runs smoothly and delivers maximum advantages for Mexican producers and workers. “Our focus is on the segments of the population that will benefit most from these trade agreements,” de la Fuente explained.

Regarding threats from former President Donald Trump concerning Mexican territory, de la Fuente reaffirmed that Mexico continues to cooperate with the United States while protecting its sovereignty. “Our dialogue follows President Claudia Sheinbaum’s principles: cooperation and coordination without subordination, while respecting our sovereignty and territorial integrity. Under these terms, the relationship is functioning effectively,” he said.
