Mexicana Gets First E2 Jet to Boost Routes, Cut Costs
Mexicana, the state-run airline managed by Mexico’s Ministry of Defense (SEDENA), has received the first of 20 Embraer E2 jets as part of a government initiative to expand domestic air connectivity and reduce operating costs. The delivery, made official on June 30, marks the beginning of the phased incorporation of 10 E190-E2 and 10 E195-E2 aircraft into the airline’s fleet.
“This morning, the aircraft departed from Embraer’s headquarters en route to Mexico,” the Brazilian manufacturer stated. The jet landed at Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA), with a welcome ceremony on July 1. The plane made a technical stop in Manaus, Brazil, before continuing its journey.
The investment in new-generation regional jets is part of a broader national mobility plan originally launched by former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and continued under President Claudia Sheinbaum. The strategy aims to strengthen the Mexican state’s role in aviation infrastructure and improve regional air service coverage.
All 20 aircraft will feature a single-class layout with no middle seats. “This configuration maximizes cabin space and provides a more comfortable experience for passengers,” said Leobardo Ávila, General Director, Mexicana, who attended the delivery ceremony at Embraer’s São José dos Campos facility.
The newly received E195-E2 offers 132 seats, while the E190-E2 has 108. Both models are designed for regional operations and short-haul routes, enabling Mexicana to expand its network and serve underserved markets. “This delivery marks a new chapter for Mexicana. The performance, efficiency, and passenger appeal of the E2 make it the ideal aircraft to support our growth strategy,” Ávila Bojórquez added.
He emphasized that the E195-E2 is “the most fuel-efficient single-aisle aircraft in the world,” aligning with the airline’s sustainability goals. The aircraft features a new-generation aerodynamic design, advanced fly-by-wire systems and Pratt & Whitney GTF engines, which collectively contribute to a 29% reduction in fuel consumption compared to previous-generation models.
Mexicana, which was relaunched in 2023 under military administration, is a flagship initiative of the federal government aimed at increasing state participation in the commercial aviation sector. The airline is headquartered at Felipe Ángeles International Airport and is expected to begin operations with the new aircraft following certification by the Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC).
The aircraft are expected to enter service within the next two months. Each unit must undergo regulatory validation and route planning before being deployed for commercial operations.
