Mexico’s federal government has  earmarked substantial funding in its 2026 draft budget to strengthen the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) and expand the country’s railway infrastructure. According to the Expenditure Budget Proposal (PPEF) 2026, AIFA would receive MX$744.7 million (US$37.2 million) in transfers, while rail projects would be allocated over MX$104.6 billion.

The government said AIFA funding aims to consolidate the airport as “an international connection hub” and support the development of a modern airport city, attracting new international routes and sustaining passenger growth.

AIFA is expected to handle 8 million passengers by the end of 2025, generating revenues above MX$3 billion (US$150 million), which would cover operating costs and yield profits. Despite its profitability, government transfers will continue to ensure financial stability. Director General Isidoro Pastor emphasized that ongoing support helps maintain consistency amid the airport’s positive results.

Financial data shows that in the first half of 2025, AIFA reported MX$414 million (US$20.7 million) in profits on MX$1.43 billion (US$71.5 million) in revenue—a 25% increase from the same period in 2023—making it the first profitable company under military administration.

Rail projects are also a major focus of the 2026 budget, with MX$104.6 billion (US$5.23 billion) allocated for passenger and cargo infrastructure. Priority projects include the Mexico-Queretaro train, receiving MX$10.5 billion (US$525 million), and the AIFA-Pachuca line, allocated MX$3.1 billion (US$155 million). The 57.1 km AIFA-Pachuca line will use existing railway rights of way where possible, adding new sections as needed, and feature two passenger tracks and three stations.
