Soracle, Archer Partner on US$500 Million eVTOL Fleet for Japan
Archer Aviation and Soracle Corporation, a newly established joint venture between Japan Airlines and Sumitomo Corporation, have announced an agreement targeting the launch of advanced air mobility (AAM) services across Japan. Central to this agreement is Soracle’s intended purchase of up to 100 of Archer's Midnight electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, a deal valued at around US$500 million.
Archer and Soracle aim to address transportation limitations in Japanese urban areas where ground traffic congestion or geographic challenges restrict movement. This collaboration with Archer underscores Japan’s intent to expand its transportation infrastructure through sustainable and innovative technologies.
“Through the operation of eVTOL aircraft, Soracle seeks to enrich lives and society by creating more accessible air transportation services in Japan. We will provide safe and reliable services to passengers by making the most of the wealth of knowledge we have accumulated at Japan Airlines and Sumitomo Corporation,” said Yukihiro Ota, CEO, Soracle.
The agreement outlines Soracle’s right to purchase up to 100 Midnight eVTOL aircraft, which will include pre-delivery payments contingent on milestone completions prior to delivery. This commitment will enable Soracle to gradually scale its fleet based on market demand and infrastructure readiness.
“Japan is widely respected for its forward-thinking approach to transportation, and this investment in advanced air mobility is another example of that. We are proud to stand with Soracle ahead of this new era of flight—together, we are committed to bringing an innovative, sustainable, and convenient transportation alternative to the country,” said Andrew Cummins, Senior Director of Business Development, Archer.
To enhance mobility options and relieve urban transportation pressures, Soracle intends to establish eVTOL networks across key Japanese cities and regions, including Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Hokkaido, Setouchi, and Okinawa.
Archer and Soracle plan to work closely with Japan’s Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB) to acquire necessary operational approvals and certifications. As part of these efforts, Archer has already initiated discussions with JCAB to ensure compliance with Japanese aviation regulations and advance its aircraft certification process in the country. “We are dedicated to ensuring that our aircraft meet Japan’s rigorous safety standards, and our collaboration with JCAB is an essential step toward making AAM a reality in Japan,” Cummins stated.
To build public support and engage key stakeholders, Soracle and Archer plan to conduct a demonstration flight of the Midnight eVTOL at the upcoming World Expo in Osaka, a high-visibility event projected to attract approximately 28 million visitors.
