The Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport in Tulum recorded a significant decline in passenger traffic in August 2025, handling 83,740 travelers—50,863 domestic and 32,877 international. This represents a sharp drop from earlier months, with March peaking at 143,589 passengers, according to airport data.

Aviation specialist Rogelio Rodríguez attributed the decline primarily to poor ground connectivity to major destinations such as Cancun and the Riviera Maya. “One of the factors driving this contraction is the lack of terrestrial connectivity for travelers who arrive by air and want to reach Cancun or the Riviera Maya,” Rodríguez said.

He also cited the relocation of certain airline operations, including Copa Airlines, and the transfer of flights to Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA), which have reduced Tulum’s appeal to tourists. “When you combine transfers from Tulum and the cost of traveling to AIFA, it becomes unattractive for visitors to the region,” he explained.

Rodríguez emphasized that the drop in traffic is largely linked to limited connectivity, which diminishes convenience and passenger appeal. While the decline does not necessarily reflect a failure of the airport itself, it highlights the role of infrastructure and accessibility in shaping passenger volumes.

Data from January to August 2025 show a peak of 143,589 passengers in March, followed by declines to 120,150 in April, 93,628 in July, and 83,740 in August. The trend underscores the challenges regional airports face in sustaining growth amid competition from larger airports and shifts in airline operations.

Rodríguez concluded that improving road access and aligning airline routes with passenger demand are critical for the airport’s recovery. He urged local authorities to prioritize infrastructure upgrades to meet traveler needs and support regional tourism.
