The United States has temporarily suspended the receipt of postal packages from Mexico as of Aug. 25, 2025, following the Trump administration’s decision to eliminate the tariff exemption for packages valued at US$800 or less, effective Aug. 29. The measure impacts both businesses and consumers relying on international mail services and is expected to remain in place until further notice.
Correos de México confirmed the suspension in an internal circular accessed by EL CEO. The notice instructed employees to inform users that the postal service “is unable to provide service to users wishing to send mail and packages to the United States of America. This measure will remain until further notice.” The circular also outlined steps for affected customers, including initiating refunds, contacting customer service Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to noon, and providing bank account details for reimbursement. Customer service numbers are 800-701-4500 and 800-701-7000.
United Airlines reported a temporary halt to transporting postal material from Mexico to the United States. Correos de México has not issued an official public statement regarding the suspension.
The disruption is not limited to Mexico. Postal authorities in India, New Zealand, Spain, Belgium, Germany, France, and Australia have also announced temporary suspensions of package shipments to the United States. India’s postal department specified that letters, documents, and gift items valued at US$100 or less would still be accepted, but other parcels are on hold.
The suspension follows the Trump administration’s new tariff policy, which removes the previous exemption for small parcels under US$800. This change, according to postal experts, has generated uncertainty among global postal operators regarding tariff application and compliance, prompting multiple countries to halt outgoing shipments temporarily.
The Universal Postal Union (UPU), a specialized agency of the United Nations, confirmed that postal operators from 25 member countries had suspended outgoing services to the United States due to uncertainty over the implementation of the new US tariffs. In a statement, the UPU said, “The postal operators of 25 member countries have notified that they have suspended outgoing postal services to the United States due to uncertainties related to transit services.”
Industry analysts warn the suspension could have immediate consequences for e-commerce and international trade. Small and medium-sized enterprises that rely on cross-border shipping may face delays and higher costs, while consumers could experience slower delivery times and increased prices for products shipped from affected countries.
