Challenges in Mango Export Season to Europe
Aztec Fruits, the producer and exporter Mexican group, is navigating a challenging mango season this year as currency dynamics and market conditions pose significant hurdles. Rodolfo Meza, Representative, Aztec Fruits, highlighted the complexities faced by the Mexican exporter, emphasizing the impact of a strong peso on their European operations.
"We are grappling with unusually high prices due to limited fruit availability exacerbated by heat conditions," Meza explained. This situation has driven prices upwards, making European shipments less viable. As a result, some prefer redirecting mango consignments to the United States market, or domestic Mexican markets, particularly for lesser-known varieties like Ataulfo, which have seen unprecedented pricing stateside. Despite this, there remains a steady demand for Mexican mangoes in Europe.
The exporter primarily deals in Kent and Ataulfo varieties, each with distinct market challenges. "Kent enjoys popularity in Europe, but our season is brief, running from early June to late July, possibly stretching into August. On the other hand, Ataulfo, which starts in February, faces resistance due to its novelty, requiring concerted efforts to persuade customers of its quality," said Meza.
Compounding these challenges is the strength of the peso against the euro, a factor Meza highlighted as detrimental to profitability. "Currency exchange rates have shifted unfavorably in recent years. This, coupled with high transportation costs and elevated fruit prices, diminishes the appeal of European exports. Competing origins with weaker currencies further complicates matters," he remarked.
Looking ahead, Meza expressed concerns about future mango and avocado seasons amid climate change impacts. "Climate variability has already affected avocado yields in Peru, and we anticipate similar challenges in Mexico," he stated.
