The Mexican government’s Fertilizers for Well-Being program has provided essential support to more than 2.05 million small and medium-scale producers, marking a key step toward the country’s goal of food self-sufficiency, according to a report from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER).

The program has achieved 92.43% of its 2024 target. Coverage has been expanded for a second consecutive year to include all 32 states, with an additional 314,162 coffee and sugarcane farmers newly added to the program. According to the ministry, over 20 states have already surpassed 90% of their delivery goals, including Aguascalientes, Baja California Sur, Colima, Queretaro, and the State of Mexico.

By the end of 3Q24, the program had distributed 982,386t of fertilizers, covering 93.04% of the planned total. These inputs have supported 3.33 million ha of key crops, representing 93.01% of the 3.5 million ha targeted. Corn, coffee, sugarcane, beans, and sorghum are among the strategic crops that have seen the greatest coverage.

To facilitate nationwide distribution, 989 Agricultural-SEGALMEX Distribution Centers have been established. This effort is supported by collaboration with the Ministry of Welfare, SEGALMEX, PEMEX, and the National Guard. Additionally, the program has created over 21,000 jobs to assist with its operations.

Alongside fertilizer distribution, SADER is providing training through in-person and virtual seminars. These efforts are aimed at promoting the correct use of agricultural inputs, sustainable soil management, and improved productivity in Mexico’s rural fields.
