Mexico Advances Support for Sinaloa White Corn Producers
Mexico’s government is working with the state of Sinaloa and local producers to support the marketing of non-GMO white corn for the upcoming fall-winter season. The initiative aims to leverage higher water levels in state reservoirs to advance national goals for white corn self-sufficiency.
The Mexican government aims to produce 25Mt of non-GMO white corn, a key component of the national diet and the agricultural economy. Julio Berdegué, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER), emphasized that the government seeks a strong planting season and harvest, ensuring that producers can expect their efforts to be rewarded.
Sinaloa is Mexico’s largest white corn producer and grows high-quality grain in strong demand by the masa and tortilla industry. “Producers of white corn in Sinaloa make an important contribution to the National Corn-Tortilla Agreement,” Berdegué said.
Berdegué also outlined support programs for the state’s livestock sector, modeled on schemes in Sonora, Coahuila, and Durango. For Sinaloa’s fisheries, he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to provide extraordinary support to local fishermen and aquaculture producers through the Bienpesca program.
During the meeting, Berdegué listened to producers’ concerns and committed to returning soon to continue dialog and establish an agreement that ensures certainty for producers ahead of the agricultural cycle. Berdegué and Rubén Rocha, Sinaloa’s Governor, agreed to continue discussions to advance the proposals presented during the meeting.
