Puebla Mezcal Producers Export First Shipment to New York
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER), through its State Representation Office (OREF) in Puebla, supported agave and mezcal producers from La Trinidad Tepango, Atlixco, in the export of their first shipment bound for New York.
The shipment included 6,093 bottles of 750 ml, 3,763 of espadin and 2,330 of papalometl, produced by Casa Huichichiqui under the direction of Luis Aguilar. The mezcal was developed with a unique flavor profile for US consumers under the brand Chicotona, in partnership with New York-based entrepreneur Daniel Peñaloza.
OREF Puebla actively participated in facilitating and monitoring the export negotiations and provided logistical and administrative guidance to the producers. The effort was carried out in coordination with the Ministry of Economy and Labor of the Government of Puebla to ensure the product carries the Hecho en México label and the Puebla Cinco de Mayo regional brand.
Morayma Joven, Head, OREF Puebla, and Víctor Chedraui, Puebla’s Minister of Economy and Labor, supervised the final stages of the shipment, which consisted of 10 pallets of mezcal from La Trinidad Tepango destined for New York.
This initiative highlights Puebla’s growing participation in international mezcal markets and supports the integration of local producers into global value chains through institutional collaboration and export promotion.
