As BYD searches for the location of its first production plant in Mexico, Jalisco emerges as a strong contender in the race to attract the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer.
Roberto Arechederra, Minister of Economic Development, SEDECO Jalisco, highlighted the state’s strategic advantages in enticing BYD, "As a state, we have crafted a comprehensive package of incentives and talent support, along with prime land offerings through industrial developers, showcasing significant value propositions to the company”.
Acknowledging the impending decision, Arechederra emphasized, "The company will make a decision based on its corporate policies, expected in the second semester of the year."
Despite Nuevo Leon’s intention to attract BYD it is reported that they are interested in the Bajio region to be closer to Mexico City.
Additionally, despite concerns raised by the Baker Institute for Public Policy regarding potential US restrictions on Chinese-made electric vehicles imported from Mexico, SEDECO's head dismissed any adverse impact on BYD's decision. Arechederra clarified, "BYD intends to cater primarily to the Mexican and Latin American markets, with no plans for exporting vehicles to the United States."
Anticipating further developments, Arechederra hinted at an upcoming announcement during Jalisco's participation in the Hannover Messe fair. He noted, "A German automotive supply company will unveil its installation plans in the El Salto municipality, bolstering our automotive supply chain."
BYD's CEO hinted at imminent news regarding the establishment of a manufacturing plant in Mexico, emphasizing a timeline of weeks or a few months for a decision.
Bloomberg's report in March outlined BYD's delegation visit to Jalisco for site analysis, which encompassed the assessment of educational centers, and population volumes in proximity to potential plant locations.
