Mexico City (CDMX) and the State of Mexico will work toward the establishment of a regional automotive cluster to take advantage of nearshoring. This alliance seeks to grow the potential member base, while having a greater national presence.
The State of Mexico Regional Automotive Cluster was founded 10 years ago, and it has 110 affiliated companies. According to data from the state government, the automotive sector in the State of Mexico contributes 12.6% to the state’s GDP, concentrates 354 economic units of transport equipment and generates 50,795 direct jobs.
Elisa Crespo, Director, State of Mexico Regional Automotive Cluster, explained that, as of June 2023, the business group would expand to include the industrial sector of CDMX. "We want to make collaboration strategies and implement the necessary mechanisms to make CDMX and the State of Mexico the most outstanding region for automotive production. In terms of nearshoring, our goal is to capture as much foreign investments as possible," said the director.
Crespo pointed out that the alliance will focus on two axes: increasing the number of automotive manufacturing operations centers in the State of Mexico and taking advantage of the highly specialized human talent that CDMX has to offer. Crespo stressed that the cluster will seek to increase collaboration with the academia, given that CDMX houses some of the most important universities in the country, such as UNAM and IPN.
“Mexico City has the most prepared teachers in the country, who have the possibility of transferring their knowledge to the student community. We want to make it clear that we are the most prepared region in these times of relocation,” highlighted Crespo.
Moreover, the group will seek to capture more investments in CDMX and to expand the operations of those industries already in the State of Mexico, while also detonating the Centre for Technological Development and Innovation Vallejo-i.
Pablo Peralta, Minister of Economic Development of the State of Mexico, highlighted that the private sector played a key role in developing the new regional cluster before the termination of the current administration. "The State of Mexico is the non-bordering state with the highest growth rate in terms of industrial parks. At the beginning of this administration, we had about 105 parks. Today we have more than 140," he said.
