Technology and Innovation vs. Corruption and Impunity

It’s a fact: In Mexico, corruption and impunity have plagued the political class, many rich businessmen, and a big part of society, hindering progress, eroding trust in institutions, and perpetuating social inequalities, betting on ignorant people and resentfulness of those who work hard and progress. However, in recent years, technology and innovation have emerged as potent weapons to combat these issues head-on. Currently the potential of the internet, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, big data, blockchain, IoT, apps, cybersecurity, and cloud computing can literally be used to combat corruption and impunity.

Certainly,technology and innovation have the potential to revolutionize the fight against corruption and impunity. Artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data, blockchain, IoT, internet, apps, cybersecurity, and cloud computing collectively provide powerful tools that can empower citizens, enhance transparency, and hold corrupt individuals accountable.

Corruption in Mexico refers to the misuse of public office or entrusted power for personal gain or the benefit of a specific group, often involving bribery, embezzlement, nepotism, and kickbacks. Impunity, on the other hand, denotes the lack of accountability and consequences for those involved in corrupt practices or crimes, exacerbating the problem further.

For instance, AI and machine learning offer us unprecedented capabilities in detecting patterns and anomalies within vast datasets. Governments, law enforcement agencies, and anti-corruption organizations can use algorithms to identify potential instances of corruption in public procurement, financial transactions, and governmental decision-making processes. Additionally, predictive modeling can anticipate corruption hotspots, allowing for proactive interventions.

AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants can enhance citizen engagement, providing a platform for anonymous reporting of corruption without fear of retaliation. Furthermore, machine learning can aid in the analysis of whistleblower reports, extracting valuable insights, and guiding investigations, by means of enormous data bases, the internet and big data. Today, analytics play a pivotal role in combating corruption by promoting transparency and accountability. By collecting and analyzing massive volumes of information from various sources, including government databases, social media, and public records, authorities can unearth hidden connections and irregularities. Moreover, big data can help in evaluating the performance of public projects and tracking the flow of funds, ensuring that resources are utilized optimally and with complete transparency.

One of my favorite technologies is blockchain, not only because it  is behind cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens — remember non-fungible means that something is unique and can't be replaced. This technology offers a decentralized and tamper-proof ledger system, ensuring that information cannot be altered or deleted. By employing blockchain in public procurement and financial transactions, governments can establish trust and eliminate the possibility of fraudulent activities. Imagine the municipal president of a town wanting to illegally seize intestate land and using his influence to change the deeds to a name lender. By means of a contract based on blockchain this would be impossible because smart contracts on the blockchain can automatically enforce penalties for breaches of anti-corruption policies, making it virtually impossible to escape accountability.

Regarding physical devices, with the Internet of Things, we can also enhance transparency in various sectors by providing real-time data on operations and processes. For instance, in manufacturing, supply chain management, and public services, IoT devices can monitor and track the movement of goods and services, reducing opportunities for corruption and enhancing efficiency.

Furthermore, IoT devices can be employed in monitoring government facilities, ensuring compliance with safety standards, and preventing corrupt practices within these institutions.

Think about the number of cellphone users in Mexico: we are talking over 92 million. The proliferation of smartphones has opened up new avenues for engaging citizens in the fight against corruption. Mobile apps can enable citizens to report incidents of corruption with ease. These apps can include features like geolocation tagging, allowing authorities to pinpoint corruption hotspots and allocate resources more effectively. To encourage citizen participation, governments can also incentivize the use of such apps through reward programs or public recognition for those contributing valuable information.

But also, as technology becomes more pervasive, the risk of cyberattacks and data breaches increases. Securing sensitive information and critical infrastructure is essential to maintain trust in digital systems and prevent corrupt actors from exploiting vulnerabilities. Governments, businesses and organizations need to invest in robust cybersecurity measures to protect against data manipulation, unauthorized access, and other cyber threats that could undermine anti-corruption efforts.

One great enabler is cloud computing. This technology provides scalable and cost-effective solutions for storing and processing vast amounts of data through servers, storage and switches. By embracing cloud-based systems, the stored information, such as videos, documents, and data, may be kept far from the country in a well-guarded location beyond the control of criminals and the corrupt. Anti-corruption agencies can collaborate across borders, share information securely, and analyze data in real-time far beyond  the reach of criminals. Moreover, cloud-based storage ensures data redundancy and backups, minimizing the risk of data loss or tampering.

However, technological solutions alone are not enough. To truly eradicate corruption and impunity, governments, civil society, and private entities must collaborate effectively, crafting comprehensive strategies that address the root causes of corruption and embrace technology as an enabler of progress. By harnessing the full potential of technology, we can pave the way for more transparent, just, and equitable societies for generations to come.

Arms trafficking from the US to Mexico to arm criminals in exchange for large amounts of money, and human trafficking for slavery and sale of organs, extortion and kidnapping, could be stopped using technology and appropriate processes and the right people, with knowledge, honesty and diligence. The technology is already available, but the will and courage to do so are lacking.
