Artificial intelligence (AI) has bestowed the world with powerful tools that enhance lives and boost productivity. But not all AI-powered tools are advantageous for every user. According to data from the World Economic Forum, deepfakes enabled by Generative AI grew 900% between 2019 and 2020 due to the realism of fake images and the gains they can generate through them.
This technique allows for the creation of incredibly realistic fake images, such as photos, videos or audios, generally used to commit virtual scams or online deception. However, it has also been used to damage the reputation of both businesses and individuals. Furthermore, this technology has also contributed significantly to the amount of misinformation and the number of "fake news” flowing through the web, undermining social and political issues with tangible consequences.
"In this dangerous environment, it is essential for individuals and brands to remain vigilant to potential vulnerabilities and take preventive measures to avoid falling victim to misinformation and cyberattacks," stated Arturo Sánchez, Commercial Director, Noventiq Mexico.
To mitigate the risks of falling victim to fake content, Noventiq specialists advise users on ways to distinguish between the authentic and the fake in a digital world where faces, voices and expressions are recreated and manipulated with astonishing precision. The gravity of the situation cannot be understated, as recent estimates from Europol researchers suggest that up to 90% of online content may be synthetically generated by 2026.
At an individual level, Noventiq stresses the importance of awareness and education about the latest innovations surrounding AI tools and the technological trends propelling them. Additionally, both individuals and companies should invest in robust authentication technologies capable of verifying the legitimacy of online content.
However, in terms of collective action, combating deepfakes requires a collaborative effort involving governments, technology companies, academic institutions and civil society. Such strong partnerships can aid in detecting and mitigating deepfake risks by sharing knowledge, resources and implementing optimal cybersecurity practices. Ultimately, the most effective approach to fighting these cyberthreats will involve establishing coherent policies and legislations that penalize the production and dissemination of deepfakes for malicious purposes.
"The popularity of social media platforms, coupled with deepfake campaigns, poses a significant threat to human rights and democracy, particularly when used to manipulate votes. Vigilance is crucial during upcoming election processes in countries like Mexico and the US," Oscar Montes, Manager, Radware, tells MBN.
Through proactive measures and collaboration, it can be possible to safeguard the integrity of information in the digital era and protect against the growing threats of deepfakes.
