Amazon Mexico has announced the launch of Climate Pledge Friendly, an initiative designed to help customers easily find and purchase products with verified sustainability features, certified by external organizations.
A study conducted by OnePoll and Amazon revealed that 91% of respondents in Mexico would like to buy more sustainable products. However, 69% admitted struggling to understand the environmental and social impact of the products they purchase. Moreover, 72% feel confused by the various sustainability claims on product labels, while 80% of respondents want businesses to help them easily identify sustainable products backed by external certifications.
To address this uncertainty, Amazon stated that Climate Pledge Friendly will give customers access to a wide range of products with sustainability attributes. These include items made with safer chemicals, recycled materials, and organic ingredients, each backed by independent third-party certifications.
Beyond providing consumers with clearer information, the initiative is also expected to benefit businesses on the platform by potentially increasing their sales. According to OnePoll, 95% of Mexican consumers say they are more likely to trust sustainability claims when backed by official certifications from recognized organizations.
“We have seen in our international stores that when customers can identify more sustainable products, they choose to buy them. This, in turn, encourages sellers to create more sustainable products that help protect the planet for future generations,” said Jessica Faubert, Category Leader, Amazon Mexico.
Faubert highlighted that the categories expected to see the greatest impact from the program include cleaning products, cosmetics and beauty, as well as food and beverages. Among the certifications supporting this initiative are the Global Recycled Standard and Fair Trade Certified by Rainforest Alliance. Additionally, national certifications are also included, such as Orgánico México, which ensures compliance with strict sustainable production standards for food and agricultural products.
The initiative also collaborates with Mexican regulatory bodies, such as the National Service for Agri-Food Health, Safety, and Quality (SENASICA). So far, the program has already involved over 70 local producers and brands including Tia Ofilia and Aires de Campo, along with major companies like L’Oréal, Soundcore, Philips, JBL, Ring, Earth Rated and Redken. “Being part of Amazon’s Climate Pledge Friendly initiative strengthens our commitment to empowering consumers to make informed decisions that support a more sustainable future,” said Romain Chassinat, Chief Digital and Marketing Officer, L’Oréal Mexico.
Faubert emphasized that implementing the program will be key in preventing greenwashing and eliminating guesswork in purchasing decisions, ultimately enhancing the customer experience. “Products with strong environmental and social attributes are the top choice for shoppers, both now and in the future, so it is crucial that customers can easily understand exactly what these certifications mean,” she stated.
Amazon Mexico has made significant strides in increasing the company’s sustainability through initiatives like Amazon Segunda Vida, which aims to reintegrate products and packaging into the circular economy while minimizing waste. Likewise, Amazon Renewed promotes the sale of refurbished products in good condition, preventing unnecessary disposal while offering competitive prices to consumers. Additionally, the Ships in Own Container program reduced the use of extra bags and boxes by 8% in 2023.
Globally, Amazon reached its goal of powering 100% of its operations with renewable energy—seven years ahead of schedule. Recently, the company was named the world’s largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy, supporting over 600 solar and wind projects, and it aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040.
