Retail sales among members of Mexico’s National Association of Self-Service and Department Stores (ANTAD) grew 10.3% year-over-year at the same-store level in May, marking the strongest May performance since 2022, when sales rose 11.3%.

Total-store sales, which account for new store openings over the past 12 months, increased by 13% compared to May 2024, according to ANTAD’s latest report. Adjusted for the 4.42% inflation rate recorded in May, real-term sales rose 5.6% at same stores and 8.2% at total stores.

The robust results were driven by solid consumer demand, five weekends in May, and key shopping events like Mother’s Day and the Hot Sale campaign, which ran from May 26 to June 3.

"This was the strongest performance so far this year, thanks to healthy consumer demand, the Hot Sale, and the five weekends in the month," said Antonio Hernández, senior analyst, Actinver. He highlighted that several ANTAD members reported double-digit growth during the Hot Sale.

By category, department stores led the growth with a 25.5% increase in same-store sales and a 27.1% rise in total-store sales. Retailers such as El Palacio de Hierro and Liverpool benefited significantly from Mother’s Day coinciding with a Saturday.

Self-service chains like Chedraui, La Comer, and Soriana posted more moderate gains, with same-store sales up 3.0% and total-store sales rising 5.8%.

Specialty stores, including pharmacies and retailers such as Petco, La Europea, and Martí, saw same-store sales grow by 2.7% and total-store sales increase by 6.6%.

In total, ANTAD members, comprising 85 retail chains such as HEB, Coppel, Office Depot, and others, generated MX$146.7 billion in sales during May. Year-to-date, accumulated sales from January to May reached MX$640.7 billion.

Year-to-date same-store sales for the group rose 2.9%, while total-store sales increased 5.5%.
