Fomento Económico Mexicano (FEMSA) announced the appointment of Jose Antonio Fernández Garza-Lagüera as its next chief executive officer, effective Nov. 1, 2025. He currently leads FEMSA Proximity & Health.

The succession process was designed by FEMSA’s Corporate Practices and Nominations Committee and carried out by a special panel chaired by independent director Ricardo Saldívar Escajadillo. After a comprehensive review, the committee recommended Fernández Garza-Lagüera, a decision later ratified by the board.

Fernández Garza-Lagüera has built his career within FEMSA, beginning in 2011 at Cervecería Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma Heineken. His roles have included strategic planning director at OXXO and FEMSA Comercio, CEO of FEMSA’s Plastics division, CEO of Coca-Cola FEMSA Central America, and CEO of Spin.

At FEMSA Proximity & Health, he has overseen more than 180,000 employees and managed operations spanning 28,000+ convenience stores in 11 countries, 4,300+ pharmacies in four Latin American markets, and over 550 fuel stations in Mexico.

He earned a degree in industrial engineering from Tecnológico de Monterrey and an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business.

José Antonio Fernández Carbajal, FEMSA’s executive chairman, has served as interim CEO since July 2023. He will continue in his role as chairman following the leadership transition.
