Mexico Embraces Pre-Owned Clothing Amid Circular Economy

The secondhand clothing and resale market is expanding globally, and Mexico is following the trend with consumer interest in circular practices on the rise. Over 70% of Mexican shoppers say they are willing to buy secondhand apparel in good condition, according to Statista.

Clothing, footwear, and accessories are among the most purchased categories on resale platforms in Mexico, reflecting both the search for affordable options and a cultural shift toward extending product lifecycles and reducing environmental impact.

In this context, Shein has advanced its The Next Cycle campaign, promoting garment collection, recycling, and reuse in the country. By reusing clothing and recycling fibers, the initiative aims to reduce water use, waste generation, and carbon emissions associated with new textile production.

In 2024, the campaign organized pop-up stores in three states, collecting 9,530 garments, which were sorted for donation or recycled into new fibers in collaboration with Texinova, a Mexican company specializing in responsible textile waste management.

Beyond collection, Shein seeks to raise consumer and community awareness about their role in creating a more sustainable fashion system. The initiative participated in Communication Week at Universidad Intercontinental in September 2025, engaging students in the program.

“Young people play a key role in transforming how we consume fashion. Circularity offers an opportunity to involve them and promote responsible habits that benefit the environment,” said Patrick Lassauzet, Head of Communication and PR, Shein Mexico.

Shein noted that The Next Cycle is part of its commitment to Mexico and to building a circular fashion ecosystem where each garment has more than one life.
