Ebrard to Boost Renewable Energy With Private Investment
Marcelo Ebrard, incoming Minister of Economy under Claudia Sheinbaum's administration, has announced plans to encourage private investment to boost renewable energy production in Mexico. During a meeting with representatives from Japan and COPARMEX, Ebrard emphasized the strategic importance of enhancing infrastructure for energy and water over the next six years to meet the country’s environmental goals.
According to Ebrard, the government aims to achieve over 20GW of clean energy by 2030. This will require significant private investment in both energy and water infrastructure in the coming years. In the automotive sector, Ebrard also confirmed the revival of the electromobility plan initially proposed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2023. This plan is focused on transforming the Mexican market toward the production and export of electric and hybrid vehicles.
Ebrard underscored the need to create favorable conditions for increased Japanese investment, particularly focusing on these sectors. He also highlighted the importance of regulatory improvement and his commitment to strengthening the National Commission for Regulatory Improvement (CONAMER) to simplify processes and encourage business formalization.
The Japanese Ambassador to Mexico, Noriteru Fukushima, agreed with Ebrard on the importance of strengthening the automotive sector and promoting clean energy. José Medina Mora Icaza, President, COPARMEX, emphasized the role of such meetings in enhancing business diplomacy and strengthening relations with Japan.
