ENGIE Mexico signed an agreement with the government of Campeche, through which it aims to establish collaboration for the development of energy projects in the region, as well as to promote energy transition initiatives for clean and sustainable energy. Layda Sansores, Governor, Campeche, emphasized the importance of such agreements between authorities and the private sector, as they promote coordinated efforts and drive energy development policies through natural gas projects.
"This agreement will allow the development of social projects needed by the state, impacting 45 communities in Campeche where different social projects will be implemented with a designated investment of MX$108 million (US$6.4 million)," stated the official.
Felisa Ros, Director General, Engie Mexico, mentioned that the agreement reaffirmed the company's commitment to energy projects for the benefit of the country and community development.
"For the past 26 years, ENGIE has become an ally for Mexico and the communities where we have presence through the supply of natural gas and the generation of renewable energy. With this collaboration agreement, we aim to promote the economic and social development of Campeche and the region," she expressed. Meanwhile, Carlos Adrián García Basto, Director General, Energy Agency of Campeche, highlighted that such projects create opportunities for the energy sector and position natural gas as a key fuel for energy transition.
The agreement saw the participation of the mentioned officials and the Director General of ENGIE, along with Ana Laura Ludlow, Vice President of Government Affairs and Sustainability, ENGIE. According to Ludlow, Mexico is at a critical juncture in its search for a more sustainable and environmentally friendly energy matrix. Among the alternatives, biogas from organic waste seems a promising solution that not only addresses energy and environmental challenges, but also offers specific benefits for the country, she explains. This technology will not only help reduce reliance on fossil fuels, but also contribute to strengthening the local economy, improving the quality of life of communities and responsible waste management.
ENGIE México has also recently introduced its "Supplier Development Program" with the goal of strengthening the company's value chain and improving economic conditions in the regions of operation, particularly focusing on Southeast Mexico. This initiative is poised to be a crucial driver in integrating MSMEs into the energy sector.
As part of ENGIE's commitment to invest over US$2 billion in Mexico from 2024 to 2026, a substantial portion will be dedicated to the implementation of the Supplier Development Program. In its initial phase, around 190 projects, totaling MX$200 million (US$11.8 million), will be earmarked for the southeast region, specifically designed to support MSMEs.
ENGIE anticipates that this program will directly enhance economic and energy development in the targeted regions. By actively promoting local involvement, the initiative aims to contribute significantly to the socio-economic landscape of these areas.
