In 2022, Induced by Mexico’s Economic expansion, TC Energía stated its intention of evaluating the possibility of introducing an offshore natural gas pipeline in Southeastern Mexico. As a result, it was in talks with CFE to reach a possible agreement.
The company then stated, “We are currently evaluating new growth projects driven by Mexico’s economic expansion and the need to connect natural gas to new regions of the country to serve power plants, industrial demand and LNG exports and, in doing so, reduce reliance on costly, carbon-intensive fuel oil. Potential projects include the completion of the central segment of Tula as well as a new offshore pipeline that would connect additional natural gas supply to Southeast Mexico and capacity expansions on existing assets,”
Recently, the company during the third edition of the Mexico Oil and Gas expo presented its aforementioned project “Puerta al Sureste” as an example of supporting the “Mexico Goes First” initiative. Through the program, the government seeks to strengthen the development of the Energy Sector within the country.
The company asserted the benefits of its latest collaboration with the CFE. Rafael García, Vice President of External Relations, TC Energía, pointed out that “Puerta al Sureste will guarantee the supply of natural gas to the combined cycle plants built by CFE; strategic projects of the federal government in the region and the three states that make up the Peninsula to provide them with energy security.” Furthermore, he affirmed that "it will become a flagship project to increase investment and competitiveness in the South and Southeast regions of the country and will contribute with the objective of the federal government to reduce the historical backwardness of the region.”
The pipeline is bound to transport natural gas from Tuxpan to the Port of Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, and then to other strategic projects in the Southeast, promoting the development and economic growth of the region. With a length of 715km and a capacity of 1,300MMcf/d. Leonardo Robles, Vice President of Business Development, TC Energía, reported that "the Puerta al Sureste gas pipeline project is an investment of more than 5 billion dollars that reflects the company's confidence in the economy and the future of Mexico."
TC Energía sees Mexico as an attractive destination for investments in Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and will play a key role in unleashing this potential in the country. Robles further added, “CFE's strategic alliance with New Fortress Energy to develop LNG infrastructure will use infrastructure from TC Energía, as well as our South Texas pipeline.”
