At Medikit, we are committed to the digital transformation of Mexico's healthcare system. As part of this commitment, we have conducted a study analyzing the progress and challenges of electronic prescriptions (e-prescriptions) in our country. The findings highlight both the achievements made and the areas requiring attention to ensure broader and more effective adoption.

Digitalization in healthcare is essential to modernize the sector, enabling more efficient and secure processes. However, the data from our study show that we still face significant challenges in achieving widespread implementation.

Significant Progress and Opportunities

Adoption in Public and Private Institutions: According to our analysis, 32% of private healthcare institutions have already integrated e-prescriptions into their daily workflows, compared to just 12% of public institutions. This disparity underscores the need to prioritize investments in technological infrastructure within the public sector.

Impact on Reducing Medical Errors: The implementation of e-prescriptions has led to a 68% reduction in medication prescription errors in the institutions that have adopted them. This improvement is attributed to the elimination of issues like illegible handwriting and the integration of databases that alert physicians to potential drug interactions.

Our study identifies three major obstacles to the adoption of e-prescriptions in Mexico:

  • Lack of training, cited by 56% of surveyed physicians.

  • Initial implementation costs, which pose a challenge for 40% of institutions.

  • Insufficient digital infrastructure, which affects 62% of public hospitals, limiting their ability to integrate advanced technological solutions.

A promising finding is that 78% of surveyed patients believe e-prescriptions offer greater safety and confidence by preventing the loss of physical documents. However, only 35% of patients have access to digital platforms that allow them to view their prescriptions independently.

The data we have collected indicate that Mexico is moving in the right direction, but a greater effort is needed to ensure that this tool benefits the entire healthcare system equitably.

This study reflects our commitment to innovation and our mission to build a healthcare system that is safer, more efficient, and more accessible for everyone.
