Mexico Opens New IMSS Family Medicine Unit in Ecatepec
The Mexican government has inaugurated the Family Medicine Unit (UMF) No. 93 of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in Ecatepec, State of Mexico, as part of a broader plan to expand healthcare infrastructure in the eastern region of the state.
President Claudia Sheinbaum, joined by Zoé Robledo, Director General, IMSS, and state and federal officials, led the opening ceremony. The facility will provide preventive and primary care services to over 352,000 IMSS beneficiaries.
According to Robledo, the new facility marks the first of 28 actions under the IMSS Plan Integral del Oriente del Estado de México, aimed at addressing longstanding gaps in healthcare infrastructure. Since its opening on July 14, the unit has delivered over 40,000 consultations in family medicine, continuous care, dentistry, and preventive services.
UMF No. 93 includes 51 consulting rooms, with 34 dedicated to family medicine and 13 for specialized nursing. It also offers services in occupational health, dentistry, imaging, laboratory testing, nutrition, and pharmacy. The facility operates under the IMSS "UMF Plus" model, designed to strengthen primary care and reduce hospital overcrowding.
Robledo says that the unit will be one of the first to include a traumatology and orthopedics office. There are plans to add a CT scanner in the near future.
As part of the same initiative, the State of Mexico has formally transferred the long-abandoned Ecatepec Oncological Hospital to IMSS, with the goal of restoring it for public use. The plan also includes the construction of hospitals in Nezahualcoyotl, Chimalhuacan, and Chicoloapan, as well as the establishment of the first Child Education and Care Center (CECI) in Ecatepec’s Las Américas neighborhood.
