INFONAVIT Increases Construction Goal to 1.2 Million Homes
The National Workers' Housing Fund Institute (INFONAVIT) increased its housing construction target for the current presidential term to 1.2 million homes, a significant rise from its initial goal of 500,000.
The announcement was made by Octavio Romero, Director General, INFONAVIT, during an event with Mexico’s Post Service to issue two commemorative postal stamps celebrating the institute's new policies. This change increases the total goal of the federal Housing for Well-Being program to 1.7 million new homes for the six-year term, up from the original target of 1 million new homes. The program is designed for people earning between one and two minimum wages.
"The goals are now different. President (Sheinbaum) asked us to increase them. At the beginning, it was 500,000 through INFONAVIT; right now, we are at 1.2 million," Oropeza commented during a commemorative event.
Romero stated that the institute has the financial capacity to meet the expanded goal, due to the increase in the minimum wage during the López Obrador administration. “Currently, we have MX$950 billion (US$50.5 billion) in the housing fund," he said.
For 2025, the government aims to develop 200,000 homes. During the event, the plan for the first 100,000 of these was formally signed, which included a contract with the developer Grupo Inmobiliario Herso for the construction of 3,520 homes.
Oropeza added that in addition to new construction, the administration will continue with programs to resolve the debts of its borrowers, noting that of 5 million unpayable credits identified, 1.19 million have been resolved through balance write-downs and reductions in interest rates and monthly payments.
