Claudia Sheinbaum Seeks Meeting With Trump / Housing Achievements

Sheinbaum to Call Donald Trump. President Sheinbaum announced plans to seek a meeting with Donald Trump after Jan. 20, 2026, within the framework of the upcoming USMCA review. She noted that the bilateral agenda includes pending issues such as security cooperation and the organization of the World Cup. She also described a recent call with Trump as cordial, dismissing rumors of any friction during the conversation.
Responding to Trump's comments labeling USMCA irrelevant, Sheinbaum expressed her conviction that the treaty will continue. She emphasized the deep economic integration between the nations and argued that US business leaders are the treaty's strongest defenders, citing recent US investments in Mexico as evidence of continued market confidence.
Housing Program Advances. Jabnely Maldonado, Executive Member, FOVISSSTE, reported that Fovissste benefited over 247,000 families in 2025 through its social justice program and placed over 30,000 new mortgage loans. She detailed that the current portfolio includes 845,661 credits, 70% of which belong to active workers, and announced new benefits for former public servants following a presidential decree.
Octavio Romero, Director General, INFONAVIT, announced that the institute aims to contract 404,000 new homes in 2026 under the Vivienda para el Bienestar (Housing for Well-Being) program, prioritizing workers earning between one and two minimum wages. He noted that 311,000 units were contracted in 2025, with Veracruz, Tamaulipas, Quintana Roo, and Yucatan leading development. Romero stated the institute has achieved 27% of its six-year target of 1.2 million homes.
Edna Vega, Minister of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development, announced that the Housing for Well-Being program delivered 393,686 homes in 2025, exceeding the annual goal and benefiting over 1.4 million people. She highlighted the successful collaboration between INFONAVIT, CONAVI, and FOVISSSTE in expanding coverage.
President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that the national housing program will impact at least 8 million people, specifically targeting families earning between one and two minimum wages. She detailed the plan's core pillars: building 1.25 million new homes for low-income families, granting property titles to 1 million households, and reducing interest rates for over 5 million existing mortgage holders.
