Homicides in Mexico / Drugs Seized

Seven States Account for Half of Homicides. Marcela Figueroa, Executive Secretary of the National Public Security System, reported that seven states accounted for 50.5% of intentional homicides, while Chihuahua, Baja California, Sinaloa, the State of Mexico, and Michoacan recorded the largest declines. Homicide distribution was reported as follows: Guanajuato: 10.9%, Chihuahua: 7.7%, Baja California: 7.3%, Sinaloa: 7.1%, State of Mexico: 6.5%, Guerrero: 5.6% and Michoacan: 5.4%.
September 2024 through December 2025, intentional homicides have dropped 40%, representing 34 fewer deaths per day, the lowest level since 2016. President Claudia Sheinbaum credited the decline to the government’s ongoing security strategy. “This is the lowest number since 2016 and demonstrates that our security strategy is producing results,” she stated.
Drugs Seized, 40,000 Arrested, and Nearly 1,900 Meth Labs Dismantled. Sheinbaum stressed that since October 2024, Mexican security forces have arrested over 40,000 criminals and carried out major operations including the seizure of 318t of drugs and the destruction of 887 methamphetamine laboratories.
“From Oct.1, 2024, to Dec. 29, 2025, authorities have detained 40,735 individuals for high-impact crimes, confiscated more than 318t of narcotics, including over 4 million fentanyl pills, and seized 21,400 firearms. The Army and Navy have dismantled 1,887 meth production labs,” Sheinbaum reported.
Disarmament Program. Minister of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, announced that the government’s Yes to Disarmament, Yes to Peace program has collected 9,081 firearms in exchange for cash, of which 2,642 were long guns. “During this period, authorities recovered 9,081 firearms: 2,642 long guns, 5,297 handguns, 1,142 grenades, along with ammunition and magazines,” she added.
