CAF to Boost Restoration Efforts in the Mexican Caribbean

The Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF) partnered with the Caribbean Marine Research Center (CIM) and Conservation International (CI) to support coral reef restoration projects in the Caribbean. According to CAF, efforts will primarily be centered around reef restoration, the protection of endangered species, comprehensive control and management of invasive species, and the promotion of awareness and environmental education actions in countries such as Mexico, Costa Rica, Colombia, and Ecuador.

Mexico City Joins the UN's Generation Restoration Project

Mexico City will receive a grant of up to US$100,000 to finance urban restoration as part of the UN's Generation Restoration project. SEDEMA highlighted that the government will use the funding provided by the UN to fortify citizen participation toward ecological restoration, ushering nature back into the urban environment. Over the past five years, the local government has rehabilitated more than 23,506ha of conservation land and five Protected Natural Areas. Additionally, over a thousand pollinator gardens have been established and the city's urban garden system has been integrated.

Mining Welcomes ESG Trends

According to Baluarte Minero, an increasing number of investors are implementing ESG scores and comparative studies to assess performance and corporate governance when making their financing decisions. Today's financial institutions are trying to comprehend not only financial performance but also operational processes, community relationships, and environmental and best practices. The company also emphasized that there is a need for greater transparency within the sector to build trust among the public, as past operational accidents had significantly damaged the mining industry's reputation.

Newmont Completes Acquisition of Newcrest

Newmont acquired Newcrest for US$16.8 billion. With the merger, the company aims to position itself as a leader in responsible gold mining. Moreover, Newmont expects to produce US$500 million per year in pre-tax synergies, maintaining industry leadership on environmental, social and governance issues, while having a large pool of mining experts on its team.

Jalisco Plans Full Fleet Renewal to Embrace Sustainability

Jalisco, wants to become the first state in Mexico to embrace sustainable mobility in public transportation. The state renewed 100% of public transportation units to improve the quality of journeys, which represented an investment of over US$366.6 million from public and private funds. The fleet renewal work signifies a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions per year, equivalent to 23,000 tons of CO2 annually. They will also decrease (particulate matter) PM10 by 38%, at a fare of MX$9.50 (US$0.5).

Frederick Davidson, President and CEO, IMPACT Silver, talks about the company’s operations in Mexico, focusing on the Zacualpan Gold-Silver District's geological appeal. Davidson highlights IMPACT’s unique approach in balancing development and exploration across its mines as well as its commitment to ESG matters. According to the CEO, the mining company has implemented an intensive decarbonization program in Zacualpan, State of Mexico. Moreover, they have constructed schools, hospitals, and clinics within the local community, showcasing their commitment to both environmental sustainability and community development. “While this may be a recent trend, we have consistently taken such responsibilities seriously,” highlighted Davidson.
