Light Construction Systems are becoming the users favorite way to transform, remodel and build multi-use spaces. The infrastructure company USG has seen a historical 63 percent increase in these types of construction projects in the residential sector, a five percent increase versus 2021 and 20 percent when compared to five years ago, said the company.
Traditionally focused on offices and shopping centers, USG has now delved into the residential sector, both in large format works, as well as un medium and horizontal housing, with its two most popular brands, Sheetrock and Durock, being references in the construction industry.
"We are closing a year of great success in our category. Mexico is an expanding market in which our systems have managed to grow in all sectors, especially in homes, thanks to the advantages associated with their speed of installation, safety, durability, design and comfort," explained Fernando Fernández, Director General, USG Mexico and Latin America.
DIY construction and remodeling play an essential role in Mexico, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, 43 percent of users leaned towards using their credit for home improvements and this number is expected to to reach 63 percent by the end of this year, according to the Federal Mortgage Company (SHF). Meanwhile, the latest National Housing Survey by INEGI reported that 58 percent of the owned homes in the country require repairs, while the necessity for building and expanding reaches 58 percent.
During the company’s celebration of its 120th anniversary and 53rd in Mexico, USG highlighted its mission of “improving quality of life, through exceptional spaces.” Fernández said the company’s focus on innovation has made 2022 the best year for USG Latin America in history.
Regarding the company’s objectives, Fernández highlighted the company’s role in adding value to construction workers through both online and face-to-face training. The company trained over 7,600 workers this year and USG expects this number to increase in the following years, as preference for Light Construction Systems is growing in the residential sector. "Just like the US and Canada required a solution for their specific context facing fires, earthquakes or the climate itself, today the Mexican consumer is considering the need to use our technology, which has 120 years of research."
The company announced a US$1.5 billion investment plan in the next five years, aimed toward boosting its manufacturing capacity and developing new solutions for the construction sector. Fernández emphasized the importance of government regulations and incentives, as it plays a critical role in meeting Mexico’s powerhouse potential. He expects that by 3Q23, the industry will start reaping the benefits of the private investment packages to increase the activity in the industrial sector.
