Mexico Expands Social Housing Plan to 1.2 Million New Homes
The Mexican government has expanded its Programa de Vivienda para el Bienestar (PVB), aiming to deliver 1.2 million new homes nationwide, in a coordinated effort led by the Ministry of Agrarian, Land, and Urban Development (SEDATU). The initiative involves multiple institutions, including the National Housing Commission (CONAVI), INFONAVIT, FOVISSSTE, and the Federal Mortgage Society (SHF).
At a press conference, Edna Vega, Minister, SEDATU announced the updated goal, stating that:
-
500,000 homes will be built by the National Housing Commission (CONAVI)
-
600,000 homes will be constructed by INFONAVIT
-
100,000 additional homes will be added by FOVISSSTE
-
SHF will provide financing for 100,000 homes and 250,000 home improvement projects
Additionally, the government will provide support for 1.55 million home improvements and deliver 1 million property titles. To date, housing projects have begun in 30 states, with 138,473 homes in construction or early stages. Breakdown includes:
-
CONAVI: 24,902 homes under construction, 28,247 in preliminary work
-
INFONAVIT: 29,247 homes under construction, 55,519 in preliminary stages
Vega emphasizes that no intermediaries or managers are authorized to enroll individuals into the PVB. “There are false claims on social media suggesting otherwise. Please ignore them and report any fraud,” she says.
Rodrigo Chávez, General Director, CONAVI, reveals that the institution holds 254 plots of land, totaling 743ha, to build over 100,000 homes. Construction has already begun on 62 plots for people without formal social security benefits. This month, 28,000 new homes will begin construction across 72 plots, with another 74,000 homes set to begin between August and September.
Octavio Romero, Director, INFONAVIT, said the institute will have over 300,000 homes contracted for construction by the end of 2025. Of those, 7,748 homes will be built on 28 publicly donated plots and 77,576 homes will be built on 60 privately acquired plots.
