Mexico’s Industrial Activity Up 0.6% Monthly, Down 0.4% Annually
Industrial activity in Mexico increased by 0.6% in real terms compared to the previous month, signaling a moderate recovery in the sector, reports Mexico’s National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) in the Monthly Indicator of Industrial Activity (IMAI) for May 2025.
This growth was mainly driven by the construction industry, which posted a strong monthly increase of 2.8%. Other sectors also saw positive performance: electricity generation, transmission, and distribution, as well as water and natural gas supply to end users rose by 0.4%, while manufacturing industries inched up by 0.1%. However, the mining sector contracted by 1.1%, weighing down the overall performance.
Despite the monthly improvement, the year-over-year comparison presents a more challenging picture. In May 2025, industrial activity declined by 0.4% compared to the same month in 2024. The main drag came from the mining sector, which plummeted by 8.4%. The electricity, water, and gas sector also dropped by 3.8%, and construction decreased by 1.0%. On a more positive note, manufacturing industries grew by 1.4%, standing out as the only component with positive annual growth.
