The Secretary of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport (SICT) will pour efforts toward the completion of railway projects and the expansion of internet connectivity, as it aims to finish projects in need of hefty investments, including Line 3 of the Guadalajara light train, the Mexico-Toluca Interurban Train and the expansion to the Suburban Railroad from Lecheria to the Felipe Angeles International Airport (AIFA).
SICT specified that it aims to conclude said projects during the present administration, providing 102km of roads for passenger transport with an investment that totals MX$31.4 billion (US$1.5 billion) since 2019.
SICT also provided major insights to its communications plan, which aims to address the entire population. In December 2021, the Social Coverage and Connectivity programs focused on public sites identified more than 7,000 priority service areas that require telecommunications and broadcasting services. The program found that those areas lack broadband internet and voice services. In 2022, the ministry then found more than 20,000 priority public sites in Mexico that have substandard Internet connectivity.
SICT argued that it is vital to solve internet connectivity needs, which it intends to address through free connection points. “SICT has a clear and social objective: the development of modern, safe and reliable communication and transport systems must be for everyone.Reducing the digital gap in the country could boost the internal market and foster economic reactivation; connectivity and accessibility to services should have a positive impact on people's lives, thus improving the public life of the nation,” explained SICT.
