Teléfonos de México’s (TELMEX) TMX5 Submarine Cable has officially launched operations. The cable, a state-of-the-art telecommunications project that links Baja California Sur with the rest of Mexico, involved an investment of over US$25 million. It consists of a 383km fiber-optic network designed to significantly enhance regional connectivity.

“The start of operations of this new submarine cable consolidates the country’s telecommunications infrastructure while addressing the economic and development needs of such an important region as Baja California Sur,” says Héctor Slim, CEO, TELMEX.

The new infrastructure is expected to drive economic and social development by improving the transmission of voice, data, and video services. TELMEX says that the cable will strengthen vital sectors such as tourism, commerce, education, healthcare, and entertainment, directly benefiting the inhabitants of Baja California Sur.

The TMX5 cable system was designed to meet the growing demand for digital services in the coming decades and to provide redundant and alternative routes in the event of major natural disasters, ensuring the region remains connected during emergencies.

Installation of the system adhered to strict environmental regulations, with technical and regulatory support from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT), the Mexican Navy (SEMAR), the Government of Baja California Sur, and local authorities. This process ensured that the project was developed with full protection of the marine ecosystem.
